Phu Quoc in October is the tail end of the rainy season. It still rains a lot and humidity often hovers around 85–90%, but much of it comes as showers that pass, with sunny spells in between. By November the island is sliding into the dry season and the crowds start to arrive. Coming in between is easy, as long as you plan around the sky and pack for it.

October vs November in a nutshell

October: frequent rain, often a shower of an hour or two, frequently in the afternoon or evening. The sea on the west coast can be choppy some days. The upside: quieter beaches, and low-season rates at many places.

November: drier, sunnier days, though early November can still throw the odd shower. High season kicks off, so the good rooms and tours book up earlier.

Plan the outdoor stuff for the morning

Mornings are usually the calmest part of the day. Put swims, boat trips and photos there, and keep afternoons for things you can move around: a long lunch, a nap, a wander through town. Book boat tours early in your trip, so a rough-sea day doesn't wipe them out.

Have a rainy-afternoon plan

Keep a few indoor options up your sleeve: a café to linger in, a massage, a slow dinner, or simply catching up on sleep. Showers often clear within an hour or two, so don't write the day off at the first drop.

What to pack

  • Light, quick-dry clothes. Leave most of the denim and heavy cotton at home.
  • A thin, packable rain poncho. Much easier than an umbrella, especially on a scooter.
  • A waterproof pouch for phone, wallet and passport.
  • Sandals you don't mind soaking. Canvas shoes take forever to dry.
  • A few zip bags to keep wet things away from dry ones.

The damp clothes problem

Here's the bit nobody mentions in the brochures. Rain-soaked clothes, sweaty tees, swimwear and beach towels can hang in your room all day and still be damp at night. Air-con doesn't really dry them, and damp clothes start to smell quickly.

The reliable fix is a proper wash and machine dry before anything goes back in your bag. On a 4–5 day trip, one wash mid-trip and one before your flight usually does it.
