The most useful Phu Quoc laundry tip: before you leave your clothes anywhere, ask five quick questions: per kilo or per item? What's the delivery fee? How long? Where is it weighed? When and how do I pay? Thirty seconds of asking saves most of the awkward moments at the counter.

To be fair, most laundries on the island are perfectly honest. The stories travellers do tell are usually about a price on the sign that changes at the scale, a delivery fee that stays fuzzy until the end, or change that comes up a bit short. All avoidable.

1. Per kilo or per item, and how much exactly?

This is the big one. Some hotels charge per item, and at some places that's around 80,000₫ a piece (a rough reference). For a few days of T-shirts, shorts and swimwear, per kilo usually works out several times cheaper.

Ask the price per kilo, whether drying and folding are included, and whether detergent is extra. If there's a price board, take a photo.

2. Is delivery a fixed price?

Hotels stretch from the northern tip down to An Thoi, so "depends on distance" is a common answer. Ask for one number for your hotel, and whether it covers both pickup and return or is charged each way.

3. When will it be ready, and is there express?

Get an actual time, not "this afternoon". If you've got a flight or need dry clothes tonight, ask about express and what it costs per kilo. Tell them when you really need your things.

4. Where is it weighed, and which weight do I pay for?

With per-kilo pricing, the scale is the bill. Ask where your clothes are weighed, before or after washing, and whether you can see the number or a photo. Wet clothes weigh more, so hand them in dry.

5. When and how do I pay?

Up front or on return? Cash or transfer? Before paying, do the maths yourself: kilos × rate, plus delivery if you used it. Paying cash? Count your change on the spot. Some Vietnamese notes look alike, the blue 20,000₫ and 500,000₫ being the classic mix-up.

Our answers at NightGo

Fair's fair, here's how NightGo Laundry (Alley 124 Tran Hung Dao, Duong Dong) answers the same five:

  1. By the kilo. Standard 45,000₫/kg (about US$1.75), ready in 3–4 hours. Washing, drying and folding included. Orders under 3 kg are a flat 130,000₫.
  2. Delivery is from 50,000₫ per order, both ways (a flat 50,000₫ under 3 kg). From 3 kg the fee depends on where you're staying, and we tell you the number for your hotel before we come. We come at the time you book, 8am to 10pm.
  3. Express is 55,000₫/kg (about US$2.15), ready in 1–2 hours. The shop is open 24/7, and night prices are the same as day.
  4. Weighed at the shop before washing, and you pay for the real weight. We always send you a photo of the scale with the total; wet items are weighed after washing and drying.
  5. Pay when your clothes come back, cash or bank transfer. Total = kilos × rate (or a flat 130,000₫ under 3 kg), plus the delivery fee we quoted if you used delivery. No hidden fees, no night surcharge.

So 3 kg standard with delivery is 3 × 45,000₫ + from 50,000₫ = from 185,000₫, about US$7.20.

FAQ

Should I pay before the wash?

Paying on return is safer, since you can check your clothes first. That's how we work.

Can I send suits, wool or silk?

No. We wash, dry and fold; we don't dry clean. Keep anything "dry clean only" out.

Can whites and colours be washed separately?

Yes, write it in your notes when you book. We follow your notes, kids' clothes included. Each extra machine for splitting your clothes is 60,000₫; we message you the price first and only go ahead once you agree.
